Who Owns the Media?

“In almost every act of our lives whether in the sphere of politics or business in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the media.” Media can be used for a variety of purposes such as education, entertainment, journalism, public service announcements, and even personal matters. Some types of media include newspapers, magazines, films, radio, television, websites, books, CDs, DVDs, and more.

Media literacy is the ability to understand the messages that we get, hear and that are told to us every day. But, the actual definition of literacy was, the ability to understand and communicate in print. But the world has changed, grew in technology, and media in print is no longer the dominant media format in the world.

The Internet is now called a groundbreaking interactive marketplace of ideas, in which anyone with the right tools can use. But, information used in the internet has many useful online resources. The internet can also include offensive materials such as an attempt to turn the public opinion against certain groups of people.

The media is responsible for many of the experiences and feelings we get and with them we build up our personality and our understandings of the world.

The media also has a great influence on politics and on social change. Television can influence the election of a national leader just by the image we see and by the way that image makes us feel. According to a source, “Even the white house is broadcasting messages to thousands of civilians with public broadcastings. That public broadcasting had found itself in the crosshairs of a partisan firing squad. New and intensifying ideological pressures from the Bush Administration have forced PBS stations to add new programs and alter others, in an attempt to be "more balanced" in the view of the current leadership.”

Media messages can change the way people act, think, and also their attitudes, behaviors and values. But because of that, people can control the media messages they produce; which concludes to the point that the people, and the way the think, own the media.
